Plans have been unveiled for the largest solar power facility ever on US government property, a 15-megawatt photovoltaic plant at the Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona.
The system is to be designed and built by California firm SunPower Corporation on behalf of the Arizona Public Service Company, which will own and operate it.
It is to comprise 52,000 SunPower solar panels no a 100-acre site, using a single-axis tracking system to follow the sun across the sky.
Generating enough power to supply the equivalent of 3,750 Arizona homes, the system will provide power to the Air Force Base under a long-term power purchase agreement with APS.
The project is the second solar project for the Luke Air Force Base in which APS has partnered. A 375-kilowatt system was installed in 2006 on the Base Exchange roof.
SunPower has also worked with the Air Force before, developing a 14.2MW facility at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.
