Japan has offered funding and technology to build a 5MW pilot solar power station at El Borma, south of Tunisia, according to a joing statement.
The investment amount and the specified type of solar technology from Japan were not disclosed.
The joint statement was signed by Tunisia’s minister of development and international co-operation Mohamed Nouri Jouini, and Japan’s deputy minister of economy, trade and industry Todahiro Matsushita.
The two governments have carried out programmes of co-operation in various other fields since 1977. The solar energy co-operation project is the first of its kind in Tunisia.
The memorandum of understanding for this solar project will be signed in December.
In Japan itself, the East Asian state has installed 484MW of solar power systems in 2009, overtaking the US for the third place in annual capacity additions.
